Blowing, rattling
or roaring?
Exhaust repairs and replacement at our Bedford workshop. We repair sections where it is sound to do so, rather than selling you a full system you do not need.
A blowing exhaust is rarely just a noise problem.
A leak upstream of the lambda sensor throws the fuelling out, so the engine runs badly and drinks more fuel. A hole underneath the car can let fumes into the cabin. And any exhaust leak is an MOT failure. The good news is that most exhausts fail in one section, and replacing that section costs a fraction of a full system.
What you will notice
Exhaust faults announce themselves early. Catching them keeps the bill small.
Deeper, Louder Note
A sudden change in how the car sounds, particularly on start-up, usually means a joint has failed or a section has blown through.
Rattling Over Bumps
Loose heat shields and broken mountings rattle at low speed. Cheap to fix now, expensive if the system drops and damages more.
Worse Fuel Economy
A leak before the oxygen sensor confuses the engine management, which then overfuels. You feel it at the pump before you see it anywhere else.
Smell in the Cabin
Exhaust fumes getting inside the car are a genuine safety issue, not an annoyance. Get this looked at straight away.
Repair where sensible, replace where necessary
We show you the corrosion and let you make an informed decision.
Back Boxes & Mid Sections
Rear silencers rot first because they sit full of condensation on short journeys. Usually replaced as a single section rather than a whole system.
- Section-only replacement
- Quality aftermarket or OE
- Fitted same day in most cases
Section Repairs
Where the surrounding pipe is solid, a properly welded repair to a joint or small hole is a sound, cost-effective fix that will last.
- Cheaper than replacement
- Only where the metal is sound
- Honest advice on what will last
Catalytic Converters
Cats fail through age, contamination or an underlying engine fault. We diagnose the cause first, because fitting a new cat to a running fault just kills the new one.
- Underlying fault diagnosed first
- Type-approved replacements
- Emissions retested after fitting
DPF & Flexi Pipes
Cracked flexi joints and diesel particulate filter problems on modern diesels, including forced regeneration and cleaning where the filter is salvageable.
- Flexi pipe replacement
- DPF cleaning and regeneration
- Diagnostics included
Looked at properly, priced fairly
You will see exactly what has failed before you agree to anything.
Free Exhaust Inspection
Car on the ramp and the full system checked from manifold to tailpipe, including mountings, heat shields and flexi joints.
Show You the Problem
We would rather you saw the hole or the corrosion yourself. It makes the difference between repair and replacement obvious.
Repair or Replace
A welded repair where the metal around it is sound, or a new section where it is not. We will tell you which will genuinely last.
Checked & Road Tested
Leaks rechecked with the engine running, mountings confirmed secure, and a road test to make sure there are no rattles left behind.
Exhaust questions, answered
Usually not. Most systems are made of separate sections and fail in one place, typically the rear box. If the rest of the system is solid we replace only what has gone, which is far cheaper than a complete system.
Yes. Any exhaust leak, excessive noise or insecure mounting is an MOT failure, and a missing or defective catalytic converter will fail on emissions. Better to sort it before the test than pay for a retest.
Where the surrounding metal is sound, yes, and it is a proper repair that will last. Where the pipe has gone thin and papery around the hole, welding it just moves the failure a few inches along. We will be straight with you about which one you have.
Short journeys are the main culprit. The system never gets hot enough to evaporate the condensation that forms inside it, so it corrodes from the inside out. Cars used mainly for school runs and short commutes go through exhausts noticeably faster.
It varies from a modest welding repair to a full system, so we quote on the vehicle after inspection. The free exhaust check means you get a firm price before committing to anything.
Most section replacements are done within a couple of hours. Seized or heavily corroded fixings can add time, and we will let you know if that is the case rather than surprising you at the end.
