The one job you
never put off.
Cambelt and water pump replacement at our Bedford workshop, done to manufacturer intervals and torque specifications. Considerably cheaper than the engine rebuild that follows a snapped belt.
A cambelt gives no warning. It simply goes.
There is no noise, no light and no gradual decline. One moment the engine is running and the next the valves and pistons have met each other. On most modern interference engines that means bent valves, damaged pistons and a repair bill that dwarfs the cost of the belt many times over. It is the single clearest example in motoring of preventative work being cheaper than the alternative.
Time matters as much as mileage
Belts perish with age even on cars that cover very few miles.
Years, Not Just Miles
Most manufacturers specify a time limit alongside the mileage, often four to five years. A low-mileage car can still be overdue on age alone.
Water Pump Included
On most engines the water pump is driven by the belt. Replacing the belt and leaving the old pump means paying the same labour again when it leaks.
Tensioners & Idlers
Bearings in tensioners and idler pulleys wear at the same rate as the belt. A full kit replaces everything that turns, not just the rubber.
Recorded Properly
We document the work with date and mileage. That record protects your resale value and proves the interval was met.
Full kits, correct procedure
Cambelt work is unforgiving of shortcuts, so we do not take any.
Belt, Tensioner & Idlers
A complete timing kit from a recognised manufacturer, fitted with the correct locking tools so the timing is set exactly rather than eyeballed.
- Full kit, not belt only
- Engine locking tools used
- Torqued to manufacturer figures
Water Pump Together
Where the pump is belt-driven, replacing it at the same time costs a modest amount extra now and avoids repeating the whole job later.
- Same labour, small parts cost
- Prevents repeat strip-down
- Coolant replaced and bled
Vans & Commercials
Transits, Sprinters, Transporters and Crafters, where high mileages arrive quickly and intervals come round faster than owners expect.
- Light commercial specialists
- Minimised downtime
- Fleet servicing available
Timing Chain Advice
Some engines use a chain rather than a belt. Chains last longer but stretch, and a rattle on start-up is worth investigating before it jumps.
- Chain wear assessment
- Rattle diagnosis
- Honest advice on urgency
Done by the book, recorded for good
Timing work is precision work, and we treat it that way.
Confirm Your Interval
We look up the exact interval for your engine variant, by both mileage and age, and check any history you have for previous belt changes.
Full Kit Quoted
Belt, tensioner, idlers and water pump quoted together so you can see the whole picture rather than a headline price that grows later.
Fitted with Locking Tools
Engine locked at top dead centre with the proper tools, new components fitted and everything torqued to the manufacturer figures.
Checked & Documented
Engine turned by hand to verify timing, coolant bled, road tested, and the work recorded with date and mileage for your history.
Cambelt questions, answered
It depends entirely on the engine. Intervals typically fall between 60,000 and 120,000 miles, with a time limit of four to five years alongside. Give us your registration and we will look up the exact figure for your engine rather than guessing.
On an interference engine, which covers most modern cars, the valves and pistons collide immediately. That usually means bent valves and often damaged pistons and cylinder head. The repair frequently costs more than the car is worth.
If it is driven by the belt, yes. The pump has a bearing and a seal that age with the belt, and reaching it requires exactly the same strip-down. Doing it together adds a little to the parts bill and saves the entire labour cost later.
Quite possibly. Rubber perishes with time regardless of use, which is why manufacturers set a time limit as well as a mileage. A six-year-old car with 30,000 miles can still be overdue.
Service history is the reliable answer, and many garages fix a sticker under the bonnet with the date and mileage. If there is no evidence, the safest assumption is that it has not been done.
Most cambelt jobs are a full day. Some engines need more dismantling to reach the timing cover, and we will tell you what your vehicle involves when we quote.
